Why the Erie paper needs a copy editor

I’ve invited comment from executive editor Rick Sayers. (UPDATE: As of 9:15 p.m. ET he hasn’t responded. I guess he wants to forget about it and move on.)

Why is it that newspaper websites NEVER tell you what their geography is?
    Erie?
    Erie Canal?
    Erie, PA?
    The country of Ireland?

That’s “Erie, Pa.,” Dave, to conform to AP style … .

Seriously, the Times-News has won numerous “best newspaper” awards in the state, despite considerable newsroom and backshop layoffs over the past decade. The mistake is inexcusable, sure, but it’s also understandable in the age of “do more with less” newspaper management.

That’s the correct spelling in Pennsylvania.

It took a lot of doing, but I clicked on the “About Us” link at the bottom of the home page, and it took me to a page that said, “205 West Twelfth Street Erie, PA 16534″

    I’m exhausted…

Actually, Harvey, we native Pennsyltuckians still cling to the classic “Penna.,” as in “Registered with the Penna. Dept. of Agriculture” label that used to be a national mark of quality snack foods. Of course, that goes way back to when our motto was the grammatically challenged (but folksy) “You’ve got a friend in Pennsylvania.”

Mark — AP style allows the use of ZIP code abbreviations when part of a mailing address, but uses a different set of state abbreviations for in-text references. For example, Arkansas is “Ark.,” California is “Calif.,” and there is no abbreviation for Ohio, Iowa, Utah, etc.

Now, back to my breakfast of scrapple and ekks … .

Bill, my comment was in regard to Dave’s comment, where he couldn’t seemingly find where Erie was. I’m well-versed in AP style.

Mark — Gotcha. Sorry about the misread. BR

Let he who is without sin cast the first stone. I worry more about the errors in grammar that I hear nightly on the MSM.
