“The best way I can describe my leave-taking is that my job changed, and I didn’t,” longtime Hartford Courant columnist Susan Campbell tells readers in her final column.
If you want to use my leave-taking as cause for celebration, have at it. The paper most likely will improve after I’m gone. I have left a church and a hometown, and both flourished without me.
Here’s how I see things: The corporation that owns The Courant will come through bankruptcy and sell off its holdings and this historic, proud newspaper will be bought by someone who understands the vital role of a free press. I haven’t the patience to wait, and I hope the people who continue to slog through are rewarded handsomely for their fidelity.
