Lee Enterprises kills two print editions of Suburban Journals of Greater St. Louis, lays off 20

Lee Enterprises is folding two of the six weekly Suburban Journals of Greater St. Louis print editions, according to Suburban Journals spokeswoman Tracy Rouch.

A journalist at one of the papers tells me that up to 20 staffers got word at 9 this morning that they’ll be laid off. [Update: “There was a workforce reduction of 20,” the spokeswoman confirms.]
A second tipster writes: “The Journals were acquired in Lee’s purchase of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch in 2005 and have gone through significant staff and paper reductions since. The Suburban Journals publishes six papers. …The Journals had 35 papers when Lee took over.”

Update 2 — Here’s the Post-Dispatch’s story on Lee closing the two print editions. In the past, Lee CEO and AP board chairman Mary Junck received bonuses just as her employees were laid off. We’ll watch to see if she’s rewarded again for putting 20 more people out of work.
