With a history going back to 1881 as the only daily news source for both NU and the city of Evanston, The Daily is generally regarded as one of America’s best campus papers. The history of excellence has continued despite a tough climate for campus papers, as The Daily has won seven Pacemakers (the top award in campus journalism) in the last 10 years.

The press release is after the jump.

EVANSTON, IL – The Daily Northwestern has announced an ambitious fundraising campaign intended to expand the paper’s digital footprint, upgrade technology and fund scholarships for student staffers.

Chaired by notable Daily alumni Michael Wilbon of ESPN and Christine Brennan of USA Today, The Campaign for the Future of the Daily Northwestern aims to raise $1 million through at least 500 individual donors toward three primary goals:
* Providing a transformational technological overhaul that will help bring The Daily’s operation into the digital age so that student journalists will have access to the same types of technology they’ll be expected to wield in professional newsrooms.

* Funding scholarships that will allow students with limited means to work for The Daily rather than hold down multiple jobs.

* Building up reserves that will allow The Daily to remain focused on what it has always done best: train and inspire journalists.

“Talk to almost anyone who worked for The Daily, and they will tell you that they learned more there than in all of their journalism classes combined,” said Brennan and Wilbon, who worked together on the paper’s staff during the late 1970s and early 1980s, in a joint statement. “This campaign intends to ensure that future journalists have the same great experience.”

Founded in 1881, The Daily is among the most decorated college newspapers in the nation. It also boasts a long list of prominent alumni who’ve distinguished themselves in journalism and a variety of other fields. Over the next few weeks, some of those notable alums, including Wilbon, Brennan, Crain Communications Chairman Rance Crain, Democratic Leadership Council Founder Al From, ESPN Reporter J.A. Adande and Fox Sports Columnist Stewart Mandel, will help to spread the word about the campaign by sharing some of their own Daily memories in a series of online videos. They hope their posts will inspire hundreds of other Daily alumni to spread the word about the campaign by posting about their own experiences online.

Donations to the effort can be made online at Donors can also mail a check payable to The Daily Northwestern to 1999 Campus Drive, Evanston, Il 60208.
