Subject: David Bird

As we mourn the loss of David Bird, I want to share with you details of his funeral and offer a way to make a contribution in his memory.

David Bird

David Bird

David was a widely respected reporter for The Wall Street Journal and Dow Jones for more than 20 years. He went missing more than a year ago and was found dead near his home in New Jersey last week.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy Fleming, and their two children, Alex and Natasha.

After receiving a liver transplant ten years ago, David and Nancy became advocates for organ donations. He became an avid runner and cyclist and completed the New York City Marathon in 2013, inspiring many transplant recipients. In lieu of flowers, his family is asking that donations be sent either to a family trust or to the NJ Sharing Network Foundation, which advocates for organ and tissue donations (details are below)./CONTINUES

Additionally, the newsroom will make a separate $10,000 donation to the family trust.

Visitation hours will be this Wednesday from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Church of St. Vincent de Paul, 249 Bebout Avenue, Stirling, NJ, 07980. A requiem mass will be celebrated by the Rev. Richard Carton on Thursday, March 26, 2015, at 11:00 a.m., also at St. Vincent de Paul Church.

Please join me in expressing our condolences to the Bird family.

Update: The Journal’s newsroom union has also contributed. IAPE president Bob Kozma writes in an email:

In addition to IAPE’s initial contribution to the Bird Family Trust of $10,000, IAPE has delivered matching payments to the fund totaling $3,272.50 [of the $10,000 the IAPE board authorized in matching funds]. Thanks to additional donations this week from members and others, we have another matching payment in the amount of $920 ready to go.
