What NBC’s ‘Rock Center’ will tell you about Gawker

On January 16, Gawker’s A.J. Daulerio posted Brian Williams’ private email to Nick Denton, much to the dismay of NBC News media relations. Eight days later, a crew from “Today” and Williams’ “Rock Center” showed up at Gawker headquarters to do “an overarching profile of Gawker Media.” I asked NBC if this segment is Williams’ way of saying that he isn’t angry about the email posting. (I’ll post their response when it arrives.) I’m told the segment “won’t be out for another couple weeks at least”; I’ve asked NBC for a specific date. || UPDATE FROM AN NBC NEWS PR PERSON: “This shoot had been in the works for months, and as soon as I have an air date, I’ll be in touch.”

According to a Gawker memo, here’s what “Today” and “Rock Center” wanted to find out:

How did Nick create these sites and start his career? Why are they so important and relevant today? What are the big stories we have broken? How do we get our sources? Today Correspondent Jamie Gangel will be reporting. They are NOT looking to get into the details of Powwow, commenters, tech, etc.

The Gawker memo is after the jump.

Details
Today and Rock Center are coming to the offices on Tues Jan 24 to shoot a profile of Gawker Media, which will air on Today and Rock Center at a date TBD. They are looking for an overarching profile of Gawker Media. How did Nick create these sites and start his career? Why are they so important and relevant today? What are the big stories we have broken? How do we get our sources? Today Correspondent Jamie Gangel will be reporting. They are NOT looking to get into the details of Powwow, commenters, tech, etc.

Today Show has the biggest audience of any morning show, averaging over 5 million viewers daily. Rock Center averages 4.1 million viewers. That’s 10 million eyeballs on Gawker Media when it airs. So this is REALLY big (a PR person’s dream, honestly). I have been working with Today producer (and friend) Zoe Marcus on nailing down this timeline for the shoot:

Tuesday January 24
9am-12pm: Set up in office
12pm-1:30pm: Sit down interview with Nick and Jamie Gangel
1:30-2pm: Walk around office with Nick (maybe even on roof)
2-3pm: Interviews with Maureen O’Connor and John Cook
Afternoon: Sit in on Gawker meeting

Wednesday January 25
They would like to get some shots of Nick in his apartment, and then walking to the office

Zoe is your best contact moving forward, and I am happy to pass her along and make the introduction to whoever will be handling.

Zoe Marcus, Producer NBC Today, [email and phone deleted]

Rock Center Producer David Gelles will be coming in on Monday January 23 to do a quick walk through of our offices. He will also be the Rock Center Producer on site on Tuesday. His email is: (but Zoe is your best contact).

Let me know if you have any more questions as it gets closer.
