UPDATE: The Tribune-Review says in Wednesday’s paper that “questions emerged on Tuesday about the authenticity of the photos” that it used on the front page yesterday, and that “the newspaper will continue to pursue the origin and legitimacy of the Twitter account” that posted the photos.

“We have nothing to say at this point.”
That’s what Pittsburgh Tribune-Review managing editor James Cuddy told me Tuesday afternoon after I asked about his paper’s front-page “rampage suspect” photos (shown here) that Cleveland Scene says are not of the suspect. I called Cuddy after metro editor Dave Conti failed to respond to my phone call and email from this morning.

UPDATE: Detroit Free Press assistant managing editor/digital media Stefanie Murray sends this email:

Just saw the screenshot you posted. Yes, we are encouraging people to tweet with the hashtag and we’re running a real-time feed on our homepage. I’m monitoring it and banning abusive users and tweets that are off-topic or purely advertisement. This tweet shown, I deleted it within 5 seconds of it being posted. Obviously someone is trying to create drama where none exists by taking advantage of what we’re offering readers, posting something, then taking a fast screen shot before it is deleted. I think we can have a conversation about this, but the post with the big screenshot on your homepage now is fairly disingenuous to the real story – that tweet only existed for mere seconds.

Earlier this month, Luke Kummer tweeted this objection to the handling of his reporting a half-hour after resigning from The Daily, Rupert Murdoch’s iPad publication.

He then received this warning from the HR manager for The Daily and New York Post:

As you should recall, when you joined The Daily, you signed a Non-Disclosure/Non-Compete Agreement. In section 5 of that Agreement (see attached) you agreed that during your employment and for two years after, you “will not criticize, ridicule, or make any statement which disparages or is derogatory of the Company or its affiliates, or any of their representative employees or business products or services.”

It goes without saying that you are currently in breach of your contractual obligations to the Company. Should you engage in any further misconduct, you will leave The Daily no choice but to sue you for injunctive relief, money damages and attorneys’ fees, as provided for under the Agreement. While we have no desire to sue you, that is something only you can control. Please do the right thing and immediately refrain from any further breaches of your contractual obligations.

The photos and headline above appear on the front page of today’s Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, but Cleveland Scene’s Vince Grzegorek reports “the photos showing a teenager with two guns and a message that appears to read “02-26-12″ and ‘high school massacre’ are not of TJ Lane. Chardon students themselves have tweeted that it’s not him.” I called the Tribune-Review Metro Desk this morning and left a message for Metro editor David Conti.
